Medieval Ceramic Tankard on Feet – 300 ml

This one-of-a-kind medieval ceramic tankard combines a functional drinking vessel with the presence of a small ceramic sculpture. Its irregular body, uneven rim, curved handle and dark clay feet give it the character of an object from an imaginary old tavern.

First, the raised textured band creates a strong visual centre on one side of the mug. It adds depth to the surface and makes the form look almost architectural.

Next, layers of turquoise, deep blue, moss green and earthy brown glaze flow across the dark ceramic clay. As a result, the surface resembles water, weathered stone and oxidised metal.

Moreover, the small ceramic feet lift the tankard above the table. They change the balance of the object and give it a slightly creature-like appearance.

The pointed details around the handle and rim add tension to the asymmetric silhouette. Therefore, every side looks different, and the form changes as you turn the mug in your hand.

Although medieval vessels and fantasy imagery inspired this piece, I did not copy a historical design. Instead, I created a contemporary ceramic beer mug that works both as functional drinkware and as an individual ceramic object.

The tankard holds approximately 300 ml. Therefore, you can use it for beer, ale, cider, coffee, tea or another favourite drink.

I make every piece entirely by hand. Consequently, small differences in shape, glaze thickness, colour and texture form part of its individual character.

Care instructions

I recommend washing the tankard by hand to protect its glazed surface and sculptural details. Also, avoid sudden changes of temperature.

Do not place the tankard directly over a flame or another heat source. In addition, add dishwasher-safe or microwave-safe information only after testing this particular clay and glaze combination.
